Raja Bomoh Puteri Zaleha To Be Charged Over Ritual Video
Ibrahim Mat Zin or better known as Raja Bomoh (shaman) will be charged in the Ipoh Syariah Lower Court today concerning a viral video of a ritual supposedly done to ward off floods in Perak.
Ibrahim will be charged under Section 14 of the Perak Syariah Criminal Enactment 1992 for defaming and insulting Islam and Section 16 of the same enactment for disobeying the Fatwa of the Perak Mufti Department.
BH Online reported that 71-year-old Ibrahim will be charged alongside a woman known as Puteri Zaleha'.
The 25-minute viral video depicted a tepung tawar ceremony at Dataran JPS Teluk Intan, Perak, which involved releasing flowers and leaves, among other things, into the river to be carried by the current to the sea.
In the recording, a woman, known as Puteri Zaleha, also sang a song called ‘Mayang Sari’ while placing the holy book Al-Quran in front of them.
Yesterday, Ibrahim denied that the ritual was heretical — claiming it was an act of superstition as alleged by some parties because they wanted to avoid the flood disaster.
"Because the place is low, it is easy to flood when it rains. So, I did a releasing process (pushing the flood away) so that everything it (the flood) does not affect (us).
“I have no (ill) intentions whatsoever, I am not insulting any party.
"That's the advice of the ancients who used wood leaves, pandan leaves, the traditional method used by our ancestors to release water so that floods do not hit Teluk Intan and throughout Hilir Perak," he said in a press conference on Facebook.
The Perak Islamic Religious Department (JAIPk) previously opened an investigation paper against Raja Bomoh on Wednesday. - Mkini
