Rafizi Urges Harapan Colleagues To Understand Malay Sensitivities
PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli has appealed to Pakatan Harapan and its supporters to be more mindful of Malay sensitivities.
He said such discipline is necessary from all Harapan leaders, supporters and voters of all races to brighten the coalition’s chances of forming the next government.
Rafizi (above) added while those who lack such sensitivities are very small in number, their actions can be exploited by Umno, PAS and Bersatu to play up the race card and used to “cover up” their alleged corruption and poor administration.
“It would be a great loss to the people and country,” he said if Harapan’s chances are spoiled by “bad apples”.
Rafizi said this in a video lasting over four minutes that is posted on social media today.
The Pandan MP aspirant then urged Harapan leaders and their allies to avoid racial issues.
“We must understand that some Malay voters are reluctant to vote for Harapan because some in the coalition are insensitive to the Malay electorate,” he added.
For starters, Rafizi said non-Malays should avoid personal attacks against Malay rival politicians, especially if they have a religious background.
“That is sensitive because it can be manipulated as though non-Muslims are insulting Muslims. Let us who are Muslims respond and expose them,” he stated.
The PKR leader also urged Harapan members to avoid issues that are considered parts of the Malay institution - such as the constitutional monarchy, national language and the position of Islam.
“To my non-Malay friends, believe me when I say that we Malays will fight those who abuse power in Umno, PAS and Bersatu. We are not the type who hides behind the ‘Malay agenda’ to ruin the country,” he said.
Rafizi explained that he is often approached by non-Malay friends for help to understand the Malay sentiment on issues such as graft, failure of administration and underperforming Malay ministers.
“Some appeared to have taken a dim view on whether Malays care about corruption,” he said.
Rafizi said Malay voters wanted Harapan leaders who are honest, trustworthy, intelligent, capable administrators, and have ideas for solving problems.
However, they should also be stern in criticising their partners who appear insensitive to the feelings of the Malay community.
“Perhaps there are some in Harapan who are uncomfortable with my outspokenness, but I am a Malay whose village is in Terengganu. I too understand the sensitivities of Malay voters.
“Together we will maintain harmony and mutual respect for our friends of various races in our country. Together, we will end racial elements brought by Umno, PAS and Bersatu,” he said. - Mkini
