Rafidah Teachers In Politics Will Lead To Erosion Of Education System
Former minister Rafidah Aziz has condemned the new ruling allowing all school teachers to get involved in politics, claiming it will lead to the eventual erosion of the education system.
The veteran politician questioned if such a move would result in teachers spreading propaganda.
“It is very concerning when it was announced that teachers at all levels are now, with immediate effect, allowed to be involved in politics.
“That carte blanche without reasonable regulations will certainly raise questions and worries.
“In particular, while many teachers are dedicated and committed to their vocation, will there not be some who will be propagating political propaganda and views, which are the antithesis of what is good for Malaysians?” Rafidah said in a statement today.
Good values, unity at stake
She added that it would “infuse” the “young and impressionable” youth with “off tangent views of particular political entities”.
This, she said, would lead to destroying the good values and principles of the students as well as “eroding” the foundation of unity in diversity.
Rafidah clarified that while everyone should be given the right to participate in political activities, it should be done so as a citizen, otherwise, it may trigger problems in society.
“There must be a limit to politics and politicisation, and the unbridled greed for political survival,” she added.
The government announced earlier today that all school teachers under the Education Ministry and staff of the Community Development Department (Kemas) were allowed to get involved in politics.
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob justified the decision by saying it was in line with the democratic rights of the people to be allowed involvement in politics. - Mkini
