Putrajaya Seeks Roger Ng S Return From Us To Stand Trial
The start of the 10-year jail sentence for former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng in the United States has been postponed to Oct 6.
US prosecutors had applied for the postponement to allow more time for discussions with Putrajaya regarding the possibility of letting Ng stand trial in Malaysia first.
Yesterday, Brooklyn district judge Margo Brodie agreed to delay Ng's Sept 6 surrender date.
"The US is also working to ensure that the procedures governing the defendant's return to Malaysia will not unduly delay the service of his US sentence," prosecutors said, according to Reuters.
Ng (above) was convicted in 2022 on bribery and money laundering charges. The crimes were committed when he was working for Goldman Sachs in Singapore and worked on bonds worth US$6.5 billion (RM30 billion) which Goldman helped 1MDB sell in 2012 and 2013.
US prosecutors claim officials, bankers and their associates eventually embezzled US$4.5 billion of that sum.
Malaysia had agreed to extradite Ng to the US in 2019 on condition that he be allowed to return to stand trial. Ng was arrested by Malaysian authorities in 2018 and charged.
In December 2018, Ng claimed trial at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court to four counts of abetting Goldman Sachs to omit and make untrue material facts in relation to 1MDB guaranteed notes and bonds amounting to US$6.5 billion issued between 2012 and 2013.
Eventually, Malaysian prosecutors filed for a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) pending the sentencing phase of Ng's trial in the US.
Ng's former Goldman Sachs superior Tim Leissner pleaded guilty to similar charges in the US and later testified against Ng. He has yet to be sentenced. - Mkini
