(NSTP/ HAFIZ SOHAIMI)By NST Online KUALA LUMPUR: The National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) has been told that it needs to honour the ujrah agreement signed by borrowers, thus the scheduled salary deduction scheme should not be imposed on all loan borrowers
In a statement, Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said the Income-Contingent Loan Repayment (ICLR) scheme should not be imposed on those who have stated their commitment to make monthly repayments without salary deductions
Maszlee also reaffirmed his earlier tweet that the Cabinet has agreed to suspend the implementation of the ICLR scheme, initially scheduled to kick off next month, in order for PTPTN to hold discussions with stakeholders
"Cabinet ministers are of the opinion that all input received from the public have basis, and the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government takes the rakyat's voice into consideration, and wants PTPTN to suspend the implementation of the ICLR scheme and to look for the best formula that will benefit those involved," he said
Maszlee informed that the much talked about salary deduction scheme announced by PTPTN chairman Wan Saiful Wan Jan was brought up in the Cabinet meeting today
Minister, he said, took into account the views, suggestions and concern raised by the public, especially PTPTN loan borrowers on the matter
Earlier today, Maszlee tweeted that the scheme is suspended for the time being until they "receive collective inputs and feedback from all stakeholders"
The scheme has courted criticism since it was announced, mainly from borrowers who will have to pay more according to the percentages set by the scheme as opposed to the amount they have been been paying according to previous agreements made with the corporation
