Proposer From Different Seat Housewife Fails To Become Candidate
STATE POLLS | A woman's wish to be an independent candidate in the Kota Lama state seat in Kota Bharu, Kelantan was not fulfilled after her candidacy was rejected.
It is understood that the candidacy of Tan Lay Tho (above), 63, was rejected as her proposer who is also her husband, Ong Chi Lam, 63, is a voter from a different seat, namely Bunut Payong.
The housewife also brought a supporter, namely her uncle, Wee Choon Seng, 85, who is a Kota Lama state assembly voter.
Returning officer Izzuddin Ab Rashid announced the names of candidates for the Kota Lama seat at 11.45am at the nomination centre in the Dewan Jubli Perak Majlis Perbandaran Kota Bharu Bandar Raya Islam today.
According to him, he received five nomination papers from the five candidates present at the nomination centre.
"They presented the nomination papers that were of independent Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary, Dr Hafidzah Mustakim (Pakatan Harapan), Zamri Ismail (PAS), Tan Boon Kian or Andy Tan (Parti Rakyat Malaysia) and Tan Lay Tho (independent).
"I have checked the nomination papers and after reviewing them, I can safely decide that there is a nomination paper (Tan Lay Tho) that was rejected.
"I hereby announce that only four candidates have been confirmed to contest in this state poll," he said when announcing the names of the valid candidates.
For the record, each candidate is required to present a proposer and supporter as well as a candidate representative from the contested area during the nomination process.
As such, the Kota Lama seat was confirmed to be a four-cornered competition. - Mkini
