Perikatan Nasional has denied any involvement in the originating summons filed by former minister P Waythamoorthy, who is challenging the legitimacy of Anwar Ibrahim’s status as an MP and prime minister.
PN chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan said Waythamoorthy’s action was a personal move in his capacity as a Malaysian citizen.
“When a person is granted a pardon (by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong), there is a restriction - a disqualification - whereby he cannot contest as a member of the Dewan Rakyat for five years unless it is annulled by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“What I want to stress is that PN is not involved - this is Waythamoorthy’s personal case. As Malaysian citizens, we respect his right to bring this (originating summons),” Takiyuddin (above) told a press conference with opposition MPs in Parliament today.
ADSOn Monday, Waythamoorthy filed an originating summons against Anwar, claiming that the Tambun MP’s status as lawmaker and prime minister is unconstitutional.
In the suit filed at the Kuala Lumpur High Court, he sought a declaration that Anwar’s disqualification as a member of the august House “was never revoked” by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in accordance with Article 48(3) of the Federal Constitution.
Former minister P Waythamoorthy“This is a matter involving misrepresentation and the misleading of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (at the time), in the appointment of the defendant as prime minister under Article 43 of the Federal Constitution.
“This is an unprecedented and extraordinary situation in our country, where His Majesty’s decision was obtained based on a false qualification or misrepresentation, thereby undermining the role of the Constitution and the powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he alleged at a press conference on Monday.
Yesterday, Waythamoorthy challenged Anwar to fully disclose the royal pardon petition documents within 24 hours.
He said such a disclosure of the documents, which led to Anwar’s release from prison on May 16, 2018, would allow Malaysians to know exactly what the prime minister requested from the King. - Mkini
