Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob will address the UN General Assembly on Friday. (AP pic)NEW YORK: Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob will lead Malaysia’s delegation to the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) here.
He will join world leaders from more than 150 countries who have begun arriving here since Tuesday after the Covid-19 pandemic forced them to address the annual assembly virtually for the past two years.
Foreign minister Saifuddin Abdullah said Ismail, who is scheduled to arrive on Thursday for a three-day visit, will address the assembly in Malay during the general debate on Friday.
He said Ismail is expected to share some of Malaysia’s experiences in dealing with the pandemic and global challenges, as well as highlight solutions to global conflicts such as the crises in Ukraine, Palestine and Myanmar.

“The prime minister will underline the importance of peaceful coexistence in resolving disputes peacefully in order to create a family of nations,” he told Malaysian journalists at the office of the Malaysian Permanent Mission to the UN here on Tuesday.
Ismail is also scheduled to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the sidelines of the general assembly on Friday, when they will witness the signing of four memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between Malaysia and Palestine on the establishment of a joint committee meeting, and cooperation in the fields of health, tourism and Islamic affairs.
The prime minister will also hold bilateral meetings with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday and his Netherland counterpart, Mark Rutte, on Friday.
This is the second time that Ismail is taking part in the general assembly, after attending the virtual session last year.
Saifuddin said the theme for this year’s session, “A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlocking challenges”, is timely and will allow member states to tap multilateral platforms to address various issues facing the world.
“The emphasis is on collective commitments by world leaders to address the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and climate change,” he said. - FMT
