Pm If Bn Can Win Ge15 We Won T Wait 1 Second To Dissolve Parliament
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has signalled his willingness to dissolve Parliament soon if it means victory for Umno and BN.
Addressing delegates at the Umno general assembly, he said they won’t wait one second longer - after discussions - if Umno and BN’s victory is assured.
Ismail Sabri said that he has heard the voices of delegates pushing for snap polls, and assured that it will be discussed within Umno’s top five leaders, the supreme council and the cabinet, before presenting a proposal to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“InsyaAllah, all of us up here (the leadership stage) no matter who, wants BN to be the dominant party in the country again.
“If we are confident in our victory, we will not wait even one second to dissolve Parliament,” he added.
The Umno vice-president’s remarks were met with a standing ovation.
After ending his speech, Ismail Sabri shook hands with Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and they both raised their arms.
Previously, Ismail Sabri indicated reluctance to cede to demands from Zahid’s camp for snap polls.
At least 4 months away
Despite sounding like he will call for snap polls really soon, Ismail Sabri's superiors in Umno, Zahid and deputy president Mohamad Hasan, have indicated that it will be at least four months from now.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Umno deputy president Mohamad HasanThe duo implied that they would wait until the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Putrajaya and Pakatan Harapan expires.
The MOU stipulates that Parliament won't be dissolved until July 31 at least.
A general election must happen 60 days from the day Parliament is dissolved, meaning that polls in August or September could be likely.
An exact timeline for when to dissolve Parliament is being discussed by the party's top five leaders, Zahid said.
But don’t wait too long…
Mohamad in his winding-up speech at the Umno general assembly said while he wants snap polls after the MOU expires, it should be done before the opposition has a chance to regroup.
He cited how Pejuang was mulling cooperating with others after suffering a major defeat in Johor.
"Don't wait too long, if they unite it will be difficult for us," he said.
Mohamad acknowledged that BN's thumping victories in Malacca and Johor are due to the opposition being divided.
BN managed to win supermajorities in both Malacca and Johor - but received less than 50 percent of votes.
The victories were due to the first past the post system, in which whoever received the most votes wins, even if their competitors have more votes combined.
Meanwhile, the Umno deputy president said the government should give time to enjoy benefits that were recently announced before calling for an election.
"Don't wait too long. Let the people enjoy for two-three months what they have received (from the government), then we call for snap polls," he added.
The government recently announced a new round of Employees Provident Fund withdrawals of up to RM10,000.
Ismail Sabri had also announced an increase in minimum wages to RM1,500 which takes effect on May 1.
