Pkr Receives Over 78k New Membership Applications Saifuddin
PKR has received 78,903 new membership applications from between Nov 24 last year up until a Jan 31 deadline for registration.
Party secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the list of new members will be tabled to the respective divisions for review and objections before being included in the main membership roll that currently comprises 1,127,629 members.
"This (review) process will go on from Feb 3 until Feb 9.
"In the event of any objections raised, divisions can forward the objections to the secretary-general's office on or before Feb 9," said Saifuddin (above) in a statement.
Saifuddin said all the accepted objections will be processed and decided on by PKR's central leadership council for a final decision.
He said the PKR headquarters will be releasing a full central membership roll by as early as Feb 18, to be handed over to its Party Elections Committee for the upcoming internal polls.
"This large number of new applications shows that PKR continues to receive support from the people to drive the country's politics and leadership," added Saifuddin.
PKR is the only political party in Malaysia to implement the 'one member one vote' system and its last polls held in 2018 saw participation of around 760,000 members over the course of eight weeks from Sept 22 to Nov 10.
Since then, PKR had – through sackings or resignations – lost leaders and members now mostly affiliated with PN parties through Bersatu or the newly formed PBM whose central leaders include former PKR's women's chief Haniza Mohamed Talha, former PKR Sarawak chief Larry Sng and incumbent Tebrau MP Steven Choong who won his seat on a PKR ticket.
This time, PKR will hold its election of office bearers for the 2022-2025 session from April 22 to 29, while the national congress will be held from June 10 to 12.
The nomination period will be open from March 11 to 19. - Mkini
