Petrol Dealers Call For Clarity Over Use Of Mykad In Ron95 Subsidies
The Petrol Dealers Association of Malaysia said the costs and financial implications with the use of the MyKad for targeted RON95 fuel subsidies must be made clear.
PETALING JAYA: Petrol dealers want the government to clarify the use of the MyKad in targeted RON95 fuel subsidies, saying they have yet to be included in any engagement session on the plan.
The Petrol Dealers Association of Malaysia (PDAM) said it also has not received detailed information regarding the implementation of the plan.
It was responding to finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan, who said on Thursday the government will announce the mechanism for rationalising the RON95 fuel subsidy using the MyKad in the second half of the year.
In a statement, PDAM said it appreciates the government’s efforts to ensure a smooth transition, but several key concerns remain unaddressed.
It said the success of the programme depends on the ability of petrol station operators to adapt to changes, and the overall system could be affected – ultimately impacting consumers – if operators are unable to cope with the challenges arising from this transition.
“As the frontline retailers of fuel, petrol station operators require clear and precise guidelines to ensure the smooth execution of this initiative,” it said.
“Petrol station operators are among the key stakeholders in the fuel supply chain and without our involvement (in engagement sessions), there is a risk of operational disruptions that could impact the entire system.”
PDAM also stressed the need for transparency on costs and financial implications, noting that it must be informed in detail about any potential financial implications to ensure that no additional costs are imposed on its members.
It said if the programme’s implementation requires extra working capital, early planning must be in place to prevent disruptions to daily operations.
The association also called for its members to be compensated if additional costs are to be incurred.
It said this is crucial to ensure the sustainability of its members’ businesses and the overall success of the targeted fuel subsidy programme.
“PDAM urges the relevant authorities to engage with us immediately to address these concerns and develop a more practical and sustainable implementation plan.
“We remain committed to working with the government to ensure a fair and effective transition for all stakeholders,” it said. - FMT
