People Still Trying To Cross Districts Despite Travel Ban Says Masidi
Sabah’s Covid-19 spokesman, Masidi Manjun, said many of those turned away had already known about the ban. (Bernama pic)KOTA KINABALU: People are still trying to cross district borders even after a statewide ban was imposed on inter-district travel for the Hari Raya period.
Sabah’s official Covid-19 spokesman Masidi Manjun said police roadblocks mounted throughout the state since May 10 found that occupants in 642 vehicles attempted to cross districts.
“The police found many of those who were told to turn back and go home were aware about the ban but they were just trying their luck nonetheless,” he said, in his daily Covid-19 statement today.
“The (members of the) public who want to travel between districts but are not under essential services or did not obtain special permission are reminded not to do so.
“This is to ensure the roadblocks can be carried out smoothly.”
The Sabah government had previously banned inter-district travel from May 10 to 16 to curb the spread of Covid-19 infections during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri season.
This was to prevent the mass movement of people during the festive period. Sabah had previously practiced the zonal system whereby people in districts within the same zones were permitted to cross districts.
Masidi, who is the state local government and housing minister, said 20 compounds were issued in Sabah in the past 24 hours, 10 of them to people who did not have approvals to cross districts.
Three more were to individuals not wearing face masks and one each for organising a wedding reception and not adhering to the physical distancing rule.
The remaining five were issued to individuals who either failed to prepare paraphernalia to record personal details or failed to declare health information.
Masidi reminded the public against holding Raya functions or open houses this year. He said the authorities will continue to check private and public premises to ensure the SOPs are complied with. - FMT
