Penang Dap Convention Tomorrow Could Be A Fiery Affair

Nineteen months after Pakatan Harapan seized Putrajaya from BN, the DAP has taken a beating over the perception that it has not been able to resolve several key issues affecting its supporters
DAP has been besieged by issues involving the detention of its own members under draconian laws like Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma), the teaching of khat (Jawi calligraphy) in vernacular schools and the slashing of government funding for Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC), an MCA-owned institution
Even the party's own member, former law minister Zaid Ibrahim, raised concerns that DAP risks losing its decades-long shine, claiming that fear has dimmed the party’s electoral prospects
Speculation is rife that the Penang DAP annual convention tomorrow in Butterworth would be a fiery affair as disgruntled party grassroots seek the opportunity to speak their minds and express their views against the leadership
However, Penang DAP secretary Lim Hui Ying expressed hope that the state convention would be a family affair
Hui Ying, who is also a senator, said the party plans to “rekindle comradeship between members and reinforce their commitment to build Malaysia Baru (New Malaysia)”
She stressed that there will be time allocated for members to raise their concerns and give suggestion to party leaders
"How many will be allowed to speak will depend on the amount of time that we have," Hui Ying told Malaysiakini
Hui Ying said party members will receive updates about what the Pakatan Harapan government at both federal and state levels have "done, is doing, and will do to rebuild the country.""They (members) will take the opportunity to share their opinion and give feedback on issues, and even make suggestions on how the party can help serve the rakyat better.”Guan Eng to speak at conventionAs for issues which will be raised at the convention in Butterworth, Hui Ying said the event will focus on Penang's economy, environment and social welfare
The convention, which will be officiated by DAP secretary-general and Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, will also see resolutions passed on issues involving the state, which is helmed by a DAP-led coalition
"(However) several federal issues such as education and Sosma may also be discussed," said Hui Ying
Asked if the leadership is expecting fireworks as many national issues might be brought up, Hui Ying said, "Yes, we have to talk about these issues
"The important aspect of our annual convention is for our members and leaders to come together to learn and solve problems as one big team.” - Mkini
