Pejuang chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad says any concessions given should apply to everyone, not just to those who promise their support to the government.PETALING JAYA: Pejuang chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad says his party’s MPs will not be signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the federal government.
Speaking at a press conference in Langkawi today, the former prime minister said he believed the opposition must be free to keep the government in check.
“To us, if we get something in return (for support), it is not right. It is as if there is an element of bribery.
“If you want to give (concessions), just give everyone. Do not only give to those who promise their support.”
Mahathir said this was why Pejuang would not be entering into any agreement with the government.
He was asked to comment if Pejuang would sign an MoU with the government as Pakatan Harapan (PH) has done.
“We are free, we are not tied to any party.”
Meanwhile, Mahathir, who is the Langkawi MP, called for fully vaccinated foreign tourists who wish to travel to the island to be allowed to fly directly to the island, instead of via KLIA.
“We can impose certain conditions to prevent the spread of the virus.”
He also voiced concern about the lack of physical distancing on flights and ferries.
“Although a lot of measures have been taken to prevent people from being infected, we feel we should reduce the number of passengers so as to enable people to sit far apart.”
On Sept 16, Langkawi was opened to fully vaccinated visitors from all states in the country.
All passengers are required to be screened for Covid-19 prior to boarding their flights to the island. - FMT
