Pejuang Intends To Defend Langkawi Seat
Pejuang has confirmed that it will defend its Langkawi parliamentary seat in the forthcoming 15th general election, even though its chairperson has announced he would withdraw from the contest.
Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir (above) said Pejuang would defend all the seats the party won under Bersatu’s ticket in the previous general election.
However, he said, his party was still identifying the candidates it would field.
“Of course (Pejuang will defend the Langkawi seat), we will defend all the seats we won previously and those we haven’t won yet.
“We haven’t even assessed the question of candidates yet. Let us wait and see,” Mukhriz told reporters after a meeting with representatives and heirs of Kampung Sungai Baru residents yesterday.
Elaborating further, he said Pejuang would take into account what happened in the Johor state election last March and be more prudent.
“After what happened in Johor, we very much understand that we should cut the coat according to our cloth.
“How strong we are, in terms of membership, in terms of machinery, in terms of the best and most suitable candidate to field in a particular area.
“All that is being considered and in terms of the total, we haven’t decided yet, but definitely it will be a figure we think is appropriate for a party like us,” he added.
Ready to cooperate with anyone
Mukhriz also announced that Pejuang is always open and ready to cooperate with anyone.
“We are prepared to work with anyone and it does not necessarily have to be political parties. It includes NGOs, as long as they stick firmly to our principles that are fighting against kleptocracy, against abuse of power and so on,” he said.
Mukhriz said Pejuang has already met with many parties to discuss cooperation.
“I admit that behind the scenes, we have met with many parties, whether in government or in opposition, as well as those that are neither.
“Even parties that have never contested (in elections), we met with them and we tried to find similarities where we can face the general election together,” he said. - Mkini
