Maximus Ongkili says an Equal Partner Working Committee has been looking into the matter of equal status. (Bernama pic)KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) will table a proposal for three posts of deputy prime minister for discussions by a Special Council on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 after the general election.
PBS president Maximus Ongkili said the party, as a member of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, fully endorsed the proposal raised yesterday by Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He said the proposal would be consistent with the constitutional provision of giving Sabah and Sarawak equal status in Malaysia.
“It would represent the new Malaysia. It could be a major leap forward for the country, and I am confident it would be unanimously agreed by the council,” said Ongkili, who is minister for Sabah and Sarawak affairs in the caretaker government.

He said the proposal was long overdue.
Zahid had suggested that three posts of deputy prime minister be created to represent Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia if BN comes to power after the general election.
He said Sabah BN and Gabungan Parti Sarawak could suggest that the matter be included in the BN and GPS manifesto for the elections.
Ongkili said the subject matter pertaining to the appointment of deputy prime minister for Sabah and Sarawak had been discussed at the MA63 special council following public requests, particularly from Sabahans and Sarawakians.
“In fact, the Equal Partner Working Committee is looking at the subject matter on the equal status of both Sabah and Sarawak in the constitution,” he said. - FMT
