Pas Led Kedah Govt Can Be Toppled In State Polls Umno Leader
During last year’s general election, Perikatan Nasional dominated Kedah - winning 14 out of 15 parliamentary seats.
However, Kedah Umno chief Mahdzir Khalid is confident that a rematch at the state level will not result in another whopping victory.
Mahdzir (above) claimed that voting patterns indicate that the PAS-led state government could even be toppled in the state polls.
“Kedah used to be a BN stronghold and PAS has won and lost (the state) before. (But) it’s not a state where PAS is dominant, like in Kelantan,” he was quoted as saying by FMT.
While Mahdzir himself was swept up in the green wave and lost his Padang Terap seat, his posturing is likely due to BN and Pakatan Harapan joining forces to take on PAS and PN in the state polls.
Although a cursory glance at parliament-level data showed that the BN-Harapan combination is not enough to defeat PN in most of the federal seats, it could make a difference at the state level in constituencies where PN does not have more than 50 percent support.
The federal coalition government has also been making efforts to woo voters in order to sway support.
Meanwhile, Mahdzir told FMT that BN would propose candidates for the Kedah state election after seat negotiations between parties of the coalition government have been concluded.
He said Kedah BN is finalising the list of candidates for the consideration of the coalition’s leadership.
The Umno leader added that discussions thus far have been positive.
Separately, Mahdzir said Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor was “in his own world” regarding his claims that BN no longer has “warlords” in the state and lacked the machinery to contest successfully. - Mkini
