Pas Leadership Out Of Touch With Grassroots On Umno Tie Up Says Shahrir
Ex-Umno minister Shahrir Samad believes some PAS elites are now out of touch with reality and do not realise their grassroots members want the partnership with Umno to continue.
He said the sentiment was sincerely felt by members and leaders of both parties at the lower level.
This was proven, he said, when the first Muafakat Nasional (MN) committee at the parliamentary constituency level was formed last night in Maran, Pahang, adding that the event was officiated by state Menteri Besar Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail.
"Sincerity towards unity and consensus of the ummah (Muslim community) puts the elite PAS leaders who are in air-conditioned rooms in Putrajaya, Publika, and Kuala Terengganu really far away from the reality of their own grassroots," he said in a post on social media this morning.
The former Johor Bahru MP said the Umno-PAS cooperation, previously bound by the MN charter, now continues to be in a state of uncertainty.
At Umno's annual general assembly late last month, the party said there was still time for PAS to turn back after deciding to join Perikatan Nasional (PN).
Last week, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang confirmed the party had started discussions with Bersatu - which is currently on a collision course with Umno - on the issue of seat allocation for the elections.
Hadi, who was appointed as the prime minister's special envoy to the Middle East, said the talks were only conducted with Bersatu, thus suggesting they were favouring PN compared to MN.
Commenting on the statement, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi considered that PAS was conducting the talks without MN's "blessing".
“Any decision made in MN should be translated into implementation and if there are any discussions made outside the framework of MN, then I think it is not a discussion agreed to within MN.
"Discussions outside the MN framework are only known to those involved," he was reported as saying by Mingguan Malaysia.
According to Shahrir, Pahang is doing a good job by leading the cooperation between Umno and PAS to unite the ummah and at the same time reject the greed of the political elite.
He then linked to a Facebook post by Wan Rosdy on the official formation of the Maran Parliamentary MN Committee.
Rakyat Pahang telah mengekalkan BN sebagai parti pemerintah pada PRU14. Di Pahang telah bermulanya kebangkitan kembali...
Posted by Shahrir Samad - Tok Uban on Sunday, April 11, 2021According to Wan Rosdy, Pahang is trying its best to harmonise and maintain MN for it to endure.
He said a similar committee is expected to be formed at other parliamentary constituencies after this.
Based on uploaded photos, an agreement was signed at the event by Maran Umno Chief Shahaniza Shamsuddin and PAS Maran president Ramly Awang Abdul Rahman. - Mkini
