Palestinians At Wisma Transit To Be Moved To New Location
Some of the Palestinians at Wisma Transit staged a protest, including burning bedsheets, in January in their bid to be sent home faster.
PETALING JAYA: The 127 Palestinians staying at Wisma Transit in Kuala Lumpur will be relocated to a new location, says defence minister Khaled Nordin.
Khaled said the armed forces will cooperate with the relevant ministries and agencies to speed up their relocation, pending negotiations on their return to Egypt.
He said the recent ruckus caused by the Palestinians was due to emotional stress experienced by a few of them after being “cooped up” at Wisma Transit for more than four months.
“Wisma Transit is a security zone, with entry and exit into the area requiring the permission and approval of the armed forces beforehand.
“The commotion was well managed by Wisma Transit, with no fights or injuries reported,” he said in a written parliamentary reply.
Khaled said the Malaysian defence intelligence organisation was negotiating with Egyptian authorities to finalise the method and process of flying the Palestinians back to Egypt.
In the meantime, he said, their relocation from Wisma Transit would help reduce their emotional and mental pressure.
In October, some of the Palestinians at Wisma Transit got into an altercation with security personnel.
Last month, another commotion occurred at the building, stemming from the Palestinians’ request to expedite the process of repatriating them to their homeland.
Video recordings that went viral on social media showed a group of them causing damage, including burning bedsheets, as a form of protest. - FMT
