Pak Tam Puts Paid To Ah Long Ad Notices
Pak Tam, 45, has been taking down these illegal notices around Puncak Alam since the beginning of this year.PETALING JAYA: The experience of seeing neighbours being threatened by loan sharks or Ah Longs has prompted a real estate agent to rid his neighbourhood of all illegal loan advertisements.
The man, who only wanted to be known as Pak Tam, 45, has been taking down these advertisements around Puncak Alam since the beginning of this year.
Every morning after his morning prayers, the father of three from Kota Belud, Sabah will ride a motorcycle around Puncak Alam to remove these notices which are pasted on to lamp posts and various signages around the area.
He continues doing the same in the afternoon before the Maghrib prayer time.
“I will go to every alley in the housing estate to look for any Ah Long advertisements. Despite the feeling of fear if I ever come across these groups, I trust that God will protect people who do good.
“So far, I have not come across any Ah Longs yet,” he told FMT adding that his noble effort was to continue the intentions of the ‘older folks’ in the area who wanted Puncak Alam to be free from illegal activities.
“I am also continuing efforts for a friend who died due to health problems. He often took down these illegal advertisements too.”
Pak Tam said although the effort was insignificant, he hoped that this could at least prevent people from borrowing money from Ah Longs as they charge high-interest rates.
“I am sad to see there are residents here who are victims of Ah Longs, who threaten and spray the borrowers’ houses with paint. This is why if possible, avoid borrowing from them.
“I am taking down these advertisements to ensure that residents do not see them and are not tempted to take a loan from them,” he said.
Pak Tam also said his voluntary work was not to become popular but simply to contribute to the community according to his own ability.
“There are also neighbors who take pictures and try to spread it on social media. Since then many residents are aware of my actions.
“They support this initiative and I am happy to receive positive feedback,” said the former member of the Civil Defense Force.
He added that for the time being he has had to stop this activity due to the lockdown.
However, he is determined to continue the effort after the MCO period ends. - FMT
