Pahang Rep Apologises After Accused Of Breaking Cmco Rules

Ketari assemblyperson Young Syefura Othman has apologised after netizens accused her of breaching conditional movement control order (MCO) restrictions currently in force in Selangor.

She also clarified that she resides in Selangor although she is a member of the Pahang state assembly.
This came after she posted a photo on Instagram of her and four others apparently having a picnic at a beach at Avani Sepang Goldcoast Resort, which is located at Sungai Pelek, Selangor.

“I apologise if my actions have broken any Covid-19 SOPs (standard operating procedures). I did not use any advantage as an elected representative to move within Selangor where I reside.

“I am willing to be investigated by the authorities whether I have broken any Covid-19 SOPs,” she said on Twitter today.

It is understood that the photos were taken yesterday but were only uploaded on Instagram today. The photos have since been removed.

Under conditional MCO rules in force in Selangor at the time, interstate and inter-district travel were forbidden except for work purposes and emergencies.

Picnics were also expressly forbidden under the rules set by the National Security Council (NSC), along with any tourism activity that involves travelling in and out of conditional MCO areas.

The NSC issued a new set of rules yesterday that came into force beginning today as more states were placed under conditional MCO restrictions, but the rules mentioned above still apply.



The wearing of face masks in crowded places is also mandatory since Aug 1, but enforcement has been complicated over vague definitions on when the masks must be worn and when exceptions can be made.

Meanwhile, some netizens are pressing for Young Syefura to resign despite the DAP representative’s apology.

Some social media users also circulated screenshots of her tweet dated Aug 22 in response to Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Khairuddin Aman Razali’s apology for breaching quarantine.

Her tweet at the time simply read: “Resign lah!”

Others highlighted a different tweet dated Oct 30 where Young Syefura again targeted Khairuddin, this time when the latter failed to wear a face mask when in public.

“Pity the minister who didn’t have a mask. I have many in all sorts of colours. Want any?” she said at the time.

For the record, PAS central committee member Nik Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz had defended Khairuddin.

“It was good that he (Khairuddin) did not wear one. He is showing us the differences between crowded places where the mask is required and non-crowded places where it is not required," he said. - Mkini
