Pact Against Arrogant Bn Possible Minus Dap Says Pas Man
A member of the PAS leadership has suggested that an opposition pact may come about to unite three Malay-Muslim parties for the Johor elections.PETALING JAYA: An alliance against the “arrogance” of Umno and Barisan Nasional could come about in the Johor state elections, says a member of the PAS central leadership.
Mahfodz Mohamed, who sits on the central committee, said cooperation between PAS and opposition parties could come about – provided the opposition party is “not extreme” and, if a member of Pakatan Harapan, ready to leave DAP.
He said Umno had been increasingly keen to sideline PAS, its ally in the Muafakat Nasional pact, the moment Umno leaders returned to power in Putrajaya.
However, Umno should have realised that their comeback after their massive defeat in the 2018 general election had been with the help of PAS, when the former ruling party won many subsequent by-elections.
Mahfodz Mohamed.“If there is a proposal to invite the opposition bloc to unite with PAS and Perikatan Nasional, it is not impossible, as PAS has no problem finding new allies who are not extreme,” he said.
“For example, if Amanah and PKR want to work with PAS, they can, provided they are not extreme and are willing to leave DAP,” he said according to a Sinar Harian report.
Johor Bahru Bersatu deputy chief, Razrul Anwar Rusli suggested for the formation of an opposition alliance consisting of Bersatu, Perikatan Nasional, Pakatan Harapan, Pejuang, Muda and Warisan.
Mahfodz said Umno’s offer to allow PAS to contest four seats in Johor was “inappropriate”. Umno should offer at least six seats previously held by Amanah, he said.
“However, talks with Umno and PN are still ongoing, with PAS still hoping that the three Malay and Islamic parties are ready to work together to ensure a stronger victory for the ummah in Johor.
“However, it seems like Umno and Bersatu are unable to unite, and with BN being more interested in flying solo, PAS may have no choice but to stay with PN,” he said.
Bersatu Supreme Council member Muhammad Faiz Na’aman has also supported cooperation between PN and the opposition bloc in facing the arrogance and haste of Umno-BN in the Johor polls.
“The focus of the people, especially the voters of Johor, should be on uniting to bury the ‘court cluster’ as well as those who support the group in Umno.
“What makes it difficult for the people at a time when the Omicron variant is widespread and the economy is sluggish, is the actions of Umno leaders who are too busy politicking,” he said.- FMT
