Nurul Izzah Shares Unknown Tale Of Usb Drive Creator S Return To Malaysia
PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar shared today her behind-the-scenes role in reportedly helping USB flash drive inventor Pua Khien Seng set up a new business venture in Malaysia.
Pua was born in Malaysia but made a name for himself in Taiwan, where he is based. He is a co-founder of Phison, a major player in the tech world.
In a social media post, Nurul Izzah shared that she had met Pua two years ago.
During that meeting, she said the businessperson had expressed a desire to bring RM100 million in investments to Malaysia, as well as technology transfer valued at RM1 billion, which would allow Malaysia to spearhead the microchip design industry.
ADS“But Pua said something that touched me. (He said) ‘I can unravel the complex world of microchips, but I still fail to understand the mentality and political landscape of Malaysia’,” she related.

Pua Khien Seng (left) and Nurul Izzah AnwarNurul Izzah, who is the co-chair of a secretariat formed to support an advisory committee to Anwar Ibrahim as finance minister, said she then helped lay the ground for Pua.
She said she connected him to the country’s policy ecosystem, along with relevant agencies and ministries.
She added that she also introduced Pua to the right people, including the Selangor Information Technology & Digital Economy Corporation (Sidec).
In August last year, Pua’s new company - MaiStorage Technology Sdn Bhd - a subsidiary of Phison - began operations in Malaysia.
MaiStorage is an integrated circuit design and storage technology provider that caters to the data centre, artificial intelligence applications, and the automotive industries in the country.
It was officially launched by Anwar in May this year and aims to be publicly listed by 2028.
Nurul Izzah said she was invited to MaiStorage’s office two days ago, where Pua reportedly told her: “I have fulfilled my promise. Thank you, Nurul Izzah, for trusting me and guiding me when I needed help.”
Friendly fire
Earlier this month, the PKR deputy president was appointed as an adviser to Sidec.
Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari had justified the appointment by saying that Nurul Izzah had been playing a key role behind the scenes in the semiconductor industry.
Meanwhile, in the comments section of Nurul Izzah’s post about Pua, several PKR leaders, including Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin, commented on the development.
ADSAnother PKR assemblyperson, Kumaresan Aramugam (Batu Uban), also appeared to take a dig at Nurul Izzah’s rival in the party, Rafizi Ramli, and his allies.

Rafizi Ramli“I thought (former economic minister) Rafizi and (science, technology and innovation minister) Chang Lih Kang brought him (Pua) in, didn’t know Nurul Izzah was the one that brought him back in,” Kumaresan.
Machang Bubok assemblyperson Lee Khai Loon replied, saying he had thought the same until he read Nurul Izzah’s post.
Chang is aligned to Rafizi, while Kumaresan and Lee appear to be aligned to Izzah. - Mkini
