Northern Solar Inks Rm20 5m Ground Mounted Selco Bess Project With Fdigs Makmur

RENEWABLE energy solutions outfit Northern Solar Holdings Bhd has sealed a RM20.5 mil engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) contract with FDIGS Makmur Sdn Bhd, a fast-growing aquaculture company, for the development of a 5MW ground-mounted self-consumption solar PV (SELCO) system.
Integrated with a 10MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Pahang, the project is expected to generate 6.68 million kWh (kilowwatt-hour) of clean electricity annually, thus enabling FDIGS Makmur to achieve estimated savings of RM3.93 mil/year while reducing reliance on conventional grid power.
Incorporated in 2023, FDIGS Makmur is a subsidiary of FDI Global Sdn Bhd. The company specialises in sustainable aquaculture, particularly tiger prawn farming and seafood exports.

In January 2025, the Malaysian government expanded the SELCO framework beyond rooftops to include ground-mounted and floating solar installations within user premises.
The removal of capacity caps allows businesses and farms to generate up to 100% of their energy needs, supported by mandatory BESS integration for systems above 72kWp.
Ground-mounted SELCO opens the door for industries such as aquaculture, agriculture and manufacturing to utilise unused land for solar generation, hence achieving energy independence and cost savings while meeting their ESG (environment, social and governance) targets.
The 10MWh BESS integrated into this project acts as a “giant power bank,” storing excess solar electricity during the day and releasing it at night or during cloudy conditions. This ensures a stable 24/7 energy supply, reducing intermittency and enhancing grid stability.

“This ground-mounted SELCO project with FDIGS Makmur is a milestone for Northern Solar as it demonstrates our ability to deliver integrated solar + storage solutions under the updated SELCO framework,” commented Northern Solar’s managing director Lew Shoong Kai.
“For energy-intensive industries like aquaculture, the combination of solar and BESS is key to achieving significant cost savings, operational stability and long-term sustainability.”
According to Lew, the RM20.5 mil contract would add decently to Northern Solar’s growing order book while highlighting the group’s readiness to capture new opportunities in ground-mounted SELCO and storage solutions.
“We see this as an exciting growth frontier complementing our core C&I solar projects while also building capacity for larger-scale initiatives in Malaysia’s renewable energy roadmap,” he added.
At the close of today’s (Sept 2) market trading, Northern Solar was down 0.5 sen or 0.69% to 71.5 sen with 382,700 shares traded, thus valuing the company at RM283 mil. – Focus Malaysia
