KOTA KINABALU: Nomination for the 17th Sabah State Election began at 9am at 25 nomination centres throughout the state on Saturday (Nov 15).
Prospective candidates will have one hour, from 9am to 10am, to submit their nomination papers before the respective returning officers (RO) announce the list of eligible candidates contesting the 73 state seats.
Candidates will then have 14 days to campaign for voter support, ending at 11.59pm on Nov 28.
The Election Commission (EC) has reminded contesting political parties and their supporters to maintain public order during today's nomination process and to avoid any form of provocation.
To ensure the smooth running of the state election, the EC has appointed 25 ROs, supported by 196 assistant ROs.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said police have identified 15 hotspots requiring heightened security, with particular attention on several locations around Kota Kinabalu and the east coast.
To maintain order, he said police will deploy personnel, including from the Criminal Investigation Department, as well as the Light Strike Force and the Federal Reserve Unit, where necessary.
A total of 9,300 police personnel will also be stationed across Sabah throughout the election period, including 4,300 personnel at nomination centres to manage traffic and secure administrative buildings and Istana Seri Kinabalu.
The EC has set Nov 25 for early voting and Nov 29 as polling day.
According to EC, 1,784,843 electors are eligible to cast their ballots, including 1,760,417 regular electors, 11,697 military personnel and spouses, and 12,729 police personnel and spouses.
As of 10pm on Friday (Nov 14), PKR has announced 10 candidates and DAP seven, all under the Pakatan Harapan banner. Barisan Nasional fields candidates in 45 seats, while GRS will contest 55 through its component parties.

5 minutes agoSarawak-based Parti Aspirasi Rakyat Sarawak (Aspirasi) is trying their luck contesting in the Sabah election by fielding nine candidates.
Although the party did not win any seats in the Sarawak election in 2021, the party is vying for positions in Sabah assembly to help fight for Sabah rights as stated in the Malaysia Agreement 1963, says its president Lina Soo.
Aspirasi is contesting in Matunggong, Bandau, Kapayan, Moyong, Pantai Manis, Sindumin, Sulabayan and Bugaya.
The party has also placed a candidate in Senallang, the stronghold of Warisan president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.
Soo said the party decided to contest in Sabah following what it believed were the aspirations of Sabahans for change.
“It is also to fight for promises that have not been delivered. The party believes the message of state rights will be among issues that will influence voters in this election, especially the young ones,” she said.

Bung, who first won the newly created Lamag seat in 2020, is once again banking on the strong support he has long cultivated in the area. The Kinabatangan MP is seeking a renewed mandate in a constituency that has become one of the district’s most-watched battlegrounds this election.
His challengers reflect a mix of youth, newcomers and seasoned grassroots activists.
They are Mohd Saifulah Lokman (Warisan), 31, a Kinabatangan-born youth leader active in community outreach; Mazlin Madali (PN), 43, a former religious educator; Salahuddin @ Saalehuddin Anoi (PIS); Johainizamshah Johari (GRS–Gagasan), 39, a first-time candidate from Kota Kinabatangan; and independent contender Mohd Ismail Ayob, who filed his papers accompanied by a small group of supporters.
