(Facebook pic)GEORGE TOWN: A social media “influencer” has been told to be more mindful about involving his children in TikTok videos after complaints that he had exploited his two young sons while earning an income through TikTok, a state executive councillor said today
An initial investigation found “no strong evidence” that the children were forced or excessively exploited for profit, said Lim Siew Khim, who oversees the social development, welfare and non-Islamic affairs portfolio.
She said a complaint had been made through the Talian Kasih hotline at 9.30am on Sept 2 alleging exploitation of the two boys, aged 5 and 1, Bernama reported.
“They were said to have been featured excessively on TikTok videos used to generate income through content production, soliciting ‘gifts’ from viewers, paid reviews and meet-and-greet sessions,” she was quoted as saying.
The welfare department recorded a statement from the 33-year-old father and also contacted his ex-wife, the children’s mother.
Lim said the man denied the allegations, describing them as a misunderstanding and insisting his children’s involvement was voluntary and casual.
“The welfare department has advised the father to ensure that his children’s participation remains voluntary and age-appropriate, to limit filming activities so as not to disrupt their rest, education or emotional wellbeing, and to avoid exposure of their private lives,” she said.
He was told to give priority to the children’s best interests, in line with the Child Act, while the department continues to monitor the case, Lim said. - FMT
