No Response From Friend Biden Anwar Says On Appeal Over Gaza
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says Washington has the power to intervene in the ongoing hostilities in Gaza. (Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says he is disappointed with the US’s response to Malaysia’s appeal to do everything necessary to halt Israeli hostilities in Gaza.
Anwar said he had made such an appeal before US President Joe Biden, who had listened “very attentively to my expression and passionate call”, Bernama reported.
“There was no response. But I was addressing a friend,” Anwar was quoted as saying.
He also reiterated his call for Washington to intervene, saying it had the power to do so.
“The US should do whatever is necessary to stop the hostilities. They have the influence, mechanism and diplomatic skills, and combined (they are able) to force Israel to stop (the atrocities).”
He likewise defended his recent meeting with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Qatar, saying it had been purely diplomatic and an opportunity to persuade Hamas leaders to understand the concerns of others.
“Whether you like it or not, they do represent some portion of the Palestinian people in Gaza and you cannot deny that.”
Anwar had previously sought to allay concerns following his meeting with top Hamas leaders, saying it was part of Malaysia’s efforts to support the peace process in Gaza. The US has declared Hamas a terrorist organisation.
Anwar acknowledged that his meeting with a Hamas delegation, led by Ismail during his official visit to Qatar, might have caused anxiety “among Malaysia’s friends, especially in the West”.
Yesterday, the health ministry in Gaza said at least 35,562 people had been killed in the territory since the war broke out between Israel and Hamas. At least 79,652 people have also been injured. - FMT
