Kluang MP Wong Shu Qi has asked whether there is political will to limit the tenure of the prime minister to two terms. (Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: A DAP MP says there is no need to set a tenure limit for elected representatives since, unlike the prime minister, they do not have executive powers.
However, Kluang MP Wong Shu Qi said, there was still a need to evaluate the performances of MPs.
She said this was a normal practice in other countries where citizens’ organisations evaluated the performance of their MPs based on the number of bills passed, among others.
“We should empower Parliament so that MPs can perform their duties,” she said.
She was responding to a question posed during the Conference on Necessary Pre-GE15 Reforms jointly organised by the Bar Council and electoral reform group Bersih.
The first session of the conference was titled “Prime Minister’s 10-year Tenure Limit”.
Wong said the most important question when it came to implementing a 10-year tenure limit for the prime minister was whether those with aspirations of achieving the post would be open to potentially limiting their future powers.
“To me, the biggest challenge is whether there is political will. Would the parliamentarians be willing to support such reforms?” she said.
PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said constituents did not see the limiting of the prime minister’s tenure as a top priority.
“To the average Malaysian, it’s not relatable. They do not see the direct consequences of such a reform,” he said. - FMT
