GUA MUSANG: With only 35 Chinese voters in the Nenggiri constituency, there is no necessity for DAP to campaign for Barisan Nasional’s candidate in the coming by-election, an Umno leader said.
Supreme Council member Ahmad Maslan said generally DAP would be tasked to canvas for votes in Chinese-majority areas. However, there are not many Chinese voters in Nenggiri.
It’s not that we are prohibiting (DAP from campaigning), but logically they are not really needed, he told reporters in Bertam Lama, Gua Musang, today.
However, he welcomed both DAP and MCA if they wished to take part in the campaign. MCA had previously said they would be actively supporting the BN candidate in the by-election.
If they want to come (to campaign) by all means, but they are not compelled to, Ahmad said.
Last month, Gua Musang division chief Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah denied telling DAP to stay out of the Nenggiri by-election.
Tengku Razaleigh, who heads the Umno machinery for the state seat, told FMT in an interview he merely said there was no need for DAP to campaign for the Aug 17 by-election.
He explained that in a discussion, a question arose as to whether DAP leaders should be invited to campaign for BN’s candidate Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani.
I said, why do you want DAP leaders here for? Most of them are non-Malays and this (Nenggiri) is a 100% Malay constituency. So, that is the reason. It stops there.
He said this is in response to a report by a news portal where he was quoted as urging DAP to stay out of the by-election. - FMT
