No Discussion On Expanding Alcohol Sales Curbs In Ipoh Exco
The Perak state executive council has not discussed Ipoh City Council’s proposal to expand alcoholic beverage sales restrictions to other areas with a Muslim majority composition, said Perak Housing and Local Government executive councillor Sandrea Ng.
This comes after Ipoh mayor Rumaizi Baharin said his team is mulling the proposal following recommendations from several quarters.
“It has not been brought to the state executive council’s attention prior to this, and as such, there have been no discussions on the matter to date.
“The mayor’s recent remarks were made in response to public concerns and suggestions. However, it is important to clarify that no new policy or decision has been introduced regarding this issue,” she told Malaysiakini.
Yesterday, Rumaizi said the Ipoh City Council is mulling expanding the alcoholic beverage sales restriction to other areas with a Muslim majority composition following proposals from several quarters.
Currently, the policy is only enforced in Manjoi.
“In principle, we agree to this but let’s study the matter first,” Berita Harian reported Rumaizi as saying.
Clear guidelines present
Meanwhile, Ng pointed out that Malaysia already has clear and comprehensive regulations governing the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages.
These laws, she added, were designed to ensure alcohol sales are conducted in a manner that respects the nation’s multicultural society - while adhering to legal, public health, and religious considerations.
“The key regulations involved are the prohibition of alcohol sales to Muslims, imposing age restrictions as per the Health Ministry’s guidelines where it could only be sold to those aged 21 and above.
“And we also have compliance mechanisms where businesses are required to obtain proper licences, with alcoholic beverages displayed in designated areas with clearly visible health warnings,” said the Teja assemblyperson.
Touching on Rumaizi’s statement, Ng said any policy consideration at the local council level would align with existing state and national policies and regulations.
“Furthermore, we will ensure proper consultations with relevant stakeholders are always conducted in any policy consideration to guarantee fairness, inclusivity, and practicality.
“Transparency and constructive dialogue are essential to avoid misunderstandings and to maintain harmony in our diverse society. The government remains committed to upholding these principles,” she stressed. - Mkini
