No Backdoor Government Let The Rakyat Decide
Raja Sara Petra
Malaysians, especially politicians, love talking about parliamentary democracy, electoral reforms, respect for the rakyat’s wishes, and much more. However, of late, we have been hearing about behind the scenes dealings, backdoor government, unity government, etc. How do you reconcile what you do with what you say? Is this not a case of cakap tak serupa bikin?
The question is, when the rakyat go to the polls, do they vote for you or for your party? Maybe for some, such as Tan Chee Koon, Lee Lam Thye, etc., they can either contest the election on a party platform or as independent candidates and they will still win. This is because the voters choose them, and not their party, and even if they are party-less the rakyat would still vote for them.
For the rest of us, though, the rakyat voted for the party. So, would this not be a case of betraying the rakyat’s trust and mandate if we shift alliances? If they wanted a certain political party in the government, the rakyat would have voted for that party. They would not have voted for the other party. That means if we jump parties that is not respecting the rakyat’s wishes.
The rakyat must decide if they want Umno as the government. And if they do then this has to be decided in the general election. If the voters kick Umno out and Umno tries to get back in through the backdoor, that is what is called hidung tak mancung, pipi tersorong-sorong.
Let the voters suffer another few more years of a Pakatan Harapan government. If they have had enough of Pakatan Harapan and of its false promises and bad management of the country, then they can vote Umno, Barisan Nasional or Muafakat Nasional back in as the government. But if the rakyat still do not want Umno, Barisan Nasional or Muafakat Nasional, then let them continue with the government they chose in May 2018. Why should we take back the country if the rakyat do not want us?
