BACHOK: The Kelantan government through Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd is repairing 1,050km of old and damaged pipes that need to be replaced, at a cost of RM1 billion.


Deputy menteri besar Fadzli Hassan said the old leaking pipes are located in Kota Bharu, Bachok, Tumpat, Pasir Mas and Tanah Merah districts.


He added that the damaged pipes were detected in the last 30 years and replacement work is being carried out to ensure that the people in the state receive an adequate supply of clean water.


“The total pipes in Kelantan that are old and badly damaged is 8,000km-long, but 4,000km need to be replaced due to damage that causes the amount of non-revenue water (NRW) to be high or lost with more than 50% not reaching consumers.


The NRW reduction programme was also carried out with the conversion and replacement of meters, tank repairs and the provision of a geographical information system (GIS) through the allocation of a grant worth RM44 million by the energy transition and water transformation ministry, he said in a press conference after officiating the Jelawat water treatment plant (WTP) in Jelawat, here, today.


Fadzli added that the NRW programme involved the conversion of dilapidated and old pipes with new ones carried out along 231km, with funding amounting to RM218 million from Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad (PAAB).


Meanwhile, the state government also approved an allocation of RM5.9 million for the construction of the Jelawat WTP with a capacity of four million litres per day which will be able to supply treated water to 1,500 user accounts including areas in Gunong, Pekan Jelawat and Bandar Baharu Jelawat.
