Najib S Jail Term Slashed By Half Traffic Offenders Get 50 Merdeka Day Discount What S Cooking Madani

IN a move that could only be described as tragically Malaysian, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail recently announced a 50% discount on traffic summonses in conjunction with both the Merdeka and Malaysia Day.
That’s right. Break the law, ignore your summons, wait patiently – and if the authorities feels like it – you might be rewarded for your patriotic procrastination.
MyBayar and a MyDigital ID – two government platforms with fledgling sign-ups – may become more attractive now that cutting your summons bill in half is just a few clicks away in the middle of a costs-of-living crunch.
Proudly presented as “golden offer”, the discount runs from Aug 31 right up to Malaysia Day on Sept 16. What’s not golden is the message it subtly conveyed: why rush to settle your traffic summons for you would eventually walk away with lenient sentences.
This is not just about traffic fines. It is a culture of leniency that now defines the Madani administration. Regular traffic offenders are not the first to receive the Madani government’s “generosity”.
‘Seasonal promo ala-Madani’
Who can forget how incarcerated former premier Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak – architect of one of the world’s biggest financial scandals – had his 12-year prison sentence cut in half?

Former premier Datuk Seri Najib RazakHis RM210 mil fine? Slashed by even a bigger proportion of 76.2% to RM50 mil, of which a year will be added to his sentence for failure to pay which means he will be released on Aug 23, 2029.
While the official version was that this was the Pardons Board’s decision, it is an open secret that this tacit approval appeases UMNO – and more importantly – keeps the Madani government from falling apart.
Then came Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s DNAA (discharge not amounting to acquittal) extravaganza where 47 prima facie criminal breach of trust (CBT), graft and money laundering charges ‘vanish into thin air’.
And now, a Merdeka Day discount for traffic offenders. It’s all adding up.
Under Madani Malaysia, justice seems to operate on a seasonal promo basis. UMNO getting a bit hot under the collar? Simply halve Bossku’s prison sentence to win the heart of sympathisers who root for him. Want to stay on the good side of its reigning president? Throw in a DNAA for Zahid.

While at it, throw some “goodies” to the public by halving their speeding fines. What’s next? Who knows – maybe a ‘Buy 1, Free 1’ deal on court cases.
What is the message here? That laws are just suggestions? That accountability is flexible? That if you have enough patience or power or public holidays, everything will be forgiven?
Here’s the irony. The Madani government preaches endlessly about building a high-trust, corruption-free society.

Yet trust is a two-way street. When the government repeatedly chooses leniency over accountability – when it trivialises offences with populist gimmicks – it creates not a high-trust society but a highly-cynicism one.
And let’s not kid ourselves. This isn’t about helping the rakyat. The struggling father working as a delivery rider isn’t racking up speeding fines for fun. The real winners here are the entitled, the reckless, the repeat offenders. The very people the law is supposed to restrain.
So, here’s a modest Merdeka proposal: stop insulting the rakyat‘s intelligence. Stop equating rahmah with recklessness. And stop turning justice into a clearance sale.
Because while you can discount fines, you can’t discount public trust forever. – Focus Malaysia
