(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Religious affairs minister Na’im Mokhtar today advised against hastily issued personal opinions on Islamic law without reference to authoritative bodies, amid a row on whether Muslims should delay going on pilgrimage if the dates clash with elections
In a statement, Na’im said Islamic legal matters require deep understanding, contextual awareness, and academic discipline.
“It is extremely important that we maintain social order and avoid causing confusion that could disrupt harmony, especially when it involves acts of worship, which are the pillars of Islam, as well as democratic processes that are vital to the nation,” he said.
Na’im called for calm and patience, asking the public to await official guidance from muftis and other credible religious institutions.
“Let us prioritise knowledge and proper etiquette when discussing religious matters, and always refer to the appropriate channels in order to safeguard the sanctity of Islam and the well-being of our society,” he said.
Na’im was responding to the public debate over whether Muslims should delay their umrah or haj pilgrimages if the dates clash with those of elections.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang reportedly said that Muslims should postpone their pilgrimages if they are supposed to cast their ballots in an election.
According to Berita Harian, he said political victories must take priority so that “Islam will hold power, govern and lead”.
Islamic development department (Jakim) director-general Sirajuddin Suhaimee later said that Hadi’s comments were under review in collaboration with the federal territories mufti department and other relevant authorities.
“Jakim urges all parties to exercise caution when making statements related to religion to avoid creating public confusion,” he said. - FMT
