Mustapa Calls For Stronger Teraju To Lead New Bumi Agenda
PARLIAMENT | A Pakatan Harapan lawmaker told the Dewan Rakyat today that the role of Bumiputera Agenda Steering Unit (Teraju) should be strengthened to coordinate implementation of Putrajaya's new bumiputera agenda.
Mustapa Mohamed (Harapan-Jeli) said this was on top of pushing for overall measures to tackle issues faced by bottom 40 percent (B40) households
"The bumiputera still need assistance, either for equity control, asset ownership in urban areas, or more opportunities in businesses
"I suggest that Teraju be reactivated and given the lead role to coordinate implementation of the bumiputera agenda," the former minister said during the debate of the royal address
In his speech, Mustapa also cautioned Harapan leaders to refrain from engaging in too much politicking, particularly in the current heated climate
He also stated that Putrajaya should ensure the people understand the fiscal constraints it is operating under, which has led to certain demands for assistance or development being unmet
"The government should clearly explain the country's total debt, in a way that can be understood by laypersons.
"Otherwise the people will start to make various speculation on why the government can't do certain things," he said
Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali – whose ministry oversees Teraju – said yesterday the government will be drafting a new economic policy for the Malays centred on growth, fairness and equal distribution of wealth
Among others, he said, the policy is aimed at helping the community deal with the current financial climate and Industrial Revolution 4.0, and is in line with Harapan’s commitment to defend the rights of the bumiputera. - Mkini
