(MCMC pic)PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) says political commentator Murray Hunter was arrested in Bangkok last month after failing to cooperate with Thai authorities in an investigation
MCMC said it lodged police reports in Malaysia and Thailand in relation to Hunter’s publications concerning Malaysian institutions, including MCMC, in April and June of last year.
A civil suit was also filed in Malaysia, with the cause papers served on him in Thailand.
In a statement, MCMC said it understood that Hunter’s arrest at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok on Sept 29 was linked to his non-compliance with summonses issued by the Thai authorities to assist in their investigation.
“All matters relating to the arrest, potential offences, and possible charges fall under the jurisdiction of the Thai authorities,” said MCMC.
“MCMC respects, and will abide by, the due process and decisions of the Thai justice system.”
Hunter was arrested by Thai authorities as he was about to leave the country for a personal trip to Hong Kong.
A Thai immigration officer told FMT that the arrest was made under a warrant issued by the Bangkok southern criminal court.
Hunter was jailed overnight and released on bail pending a Nov 17 court appearance.
The Australian, once a long-time resident of Malaysia, now stays in Thailand. He is known for his critical writings on Malaysian politics. - FMT
