Murdered Guard S Widow I Feel Sorry For Alleged Killer S Family
Philomena Edwards said her late husband, S Thava Sagayam, was a loving and hardworking man.IPOH: Philomena Edwards still remembers how shocked she was on hearing her husband had been beaten up at work. Nine months later, he died in hospital – but despite her anguish, Edwards has sympathy for the alleged attacker’s wife.
“I sympathise with her. They have a young child and she’s pregnant,” she said.
“Now I live alone while the (accused’s) wife is also facing difficulties. Her husband is also in trouble since he’s in the lockup. So we’re all facing difficulties,” she told FMT.
Edward’s husband, security guard S Thava Sagayam, never regained consciousness after he was attacked at a condominium here in December 2020.
Philomena (left) lives alone now though her nephew, Nelson Raj Nathan, visits her from time to time.Thava had stopped a boy from using the swimming pool, which was closed to the public at the time. The boy’s father is alleged to have assaulted Thava in front of his son until the security guard lost consciousness.
“That incident left a massive impact on me,” said Edwards, 60. “I became short-tempered and reclusive, and struggled with depression and emotional distress.”
Thava died in hospital last August, never recovering from a coma.
A businessman, Ahmad Noor Azhar, 34, has been charged with murder, after being initially charged with causing grievous hurt.
“It was the biggest loss of my life,” said Philomena, recounting the day her husband died.Edwards hoped that her sympathy for Ahmad’s family would remind the public of the harms of acting thoughtlessly.
“Whatever the circumstances, we have to think before we act. Don’t do anything unreasonable because there will be consequences,” she said.
As she looked back on the 19 years of building a home with Thava, Edwards described her late husband as a loving and hardworking man who was always helping around the house.
“His departure has been the biggest loss in my life. He was very good, it would be hard to find a husband like him. He was always helping with work that needed to be done around the house.
Dogs and cats keep Philomena company at home now. When Thava was still alive, the couple would feed the strays regularly.“I have many illnesses. I have diabetes and high blood pressure, and I’m one who gets angry easily. But my late husband always advised me to not be angry, else I would fall ill,” she recounted.
The couple did not have any children of their own, so they shared their love by looking after stray animals, which she hopes to continue doing.
“My husband and I used to feed the stray dogs and cats daily, which I will carry on doing, but on my own now. This is the only thing that can entertain and gratify me in my husband’s absence,” she said at her home in Buntong.
However, she said she feels better since she went back to working at a plastic factory recently. “I always ask God to give me peace. I’m a little better now, I’m working and have many friends, so I’m not as lonely as before.”: - FMT
