Mps Lodge Police Reports Want Action Against Perpetrators Who Blocked Parliament
Two opposition MPs have lodged police reports demanding action against the perpetrators who directed police to cordon off Parliament's entrance from MPs.
Johor Bahru MP Akmal Nasir and Batu MP P Prabakaran make the police report at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
They pointed out that under Section 124 of the Penal Code, it was a crime to obstruct an MP's duty, which carries a punishment of up to seven years imprisonment and a fine.
"In any country that practices parliamentary democracy, MPs are given the mandate and responsibility by the people to attend Parliament and conduct their duty.
"As decreed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Parliament is to sit so that all MPs and the government can conduct their duty in accordance with the Federal Constitution," the police reports read.
This morning, police deployed the Federal Reserve Unit which formed a line outside the entrance of Parliament to prevent opposition MPs from entering.
The defiant opposition MPs had wanted to enter Parliament despite the government suspending the Dewan Rakyat sitting on grounds that there were Covid-19 cases.
The suspension came amid conflict between the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Perikatan Nasional government.
The ruler had wanted the emergency ordinances to be debated in Parliament, but the defiant government decided to revoke them without the ruler's assent.
The PKR MPs want the incident this morning to also be investigated under Section 124B and Section 124C which are related to activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.
They added that Section 9(e) of the House of Parliament (Privileges and Powers) Act 1952 also allows Parliament to punish anyone who obstructs MPs from entering the House with contempt of Parliament.
A total of 107 opposition MPs had gathered at Dataran Merdeka before proceeding to Parliament where they were blocked by the police. - Mkini
