Mp Seeks Urgent Debate On Fatal School Stabbing Edu Dg S Admission
A DAP lawmaker has submitted an emergency motion to debate yesterday’s fatal stabbing of a Form Four girl, as well as the government’s admission that many sexual harassment and bullying cases in school have been “swept under the rug”.
In a letter to Dewan Rakyat secretary Nizam Mydin Bacha Mydin, Kampar MP Chong Zhemin stressed that schools should be the safest place for children to gain knowledge, not a threat to their lives and well-being.
The incident at a school in Petaling Jaya, Chong added, serves as a stern warning that the student safety crisis has reached a critical level and requires immediate Parliament intervention.
“Even more worrying, the Education Ministry director-general, Azam Ahmad, openly admitted that many cases of bullying and sexual harassment in schools have long been swept under the carpet.
“This indicates a culture of concealment as well as systemic failure in managing student discipline and safety,” the parliamentarian said in the letter dated today.
He emphasised that Azam’s remarks point to “serious weaknesses” in the complaint, monitoring, and follow-up mechanisms employed by schools and the Education Ministry when handling bullying, abuse, and sexual harassment cases.

Education Ministry director-general Azam Ahmad“It also highlights the urgent need to review school safety procedures, student counselling systems, and teacher training to address discipline and safety issues in a more comprehensive manner,” he said.
Chong argued that the motion is of urgent importance as the Dewan Rakyat should push for a review of school safety guidelines and student supervision procedures.
Calling for the establishment of an independent commission of inquiry on school safety and bullying culture, the motion also urged for the formulation of a stronger student protection policy, including a safe and independent complaint mechanism, as well as moves to ensure the Education Ministry’s full accountability for every case of abuse, bullying, and sexual harassment in educational institutions.
When contacted, Chong said the Dewan Rakyat speaker is expected to deliver his decision on the motion submission next week.
Girl murdered by schoolmate
Yesterday, Azam reportedly said that within the past three months of his helming the ministry’s director-general office, he has collected “a lot of data” on sexual harassment and bullying cases being “swept under the carpet”.
Earlier in the day, the public was shocked by news of a 14-year-old student fatally stabbing his 16-year-old classmate, with media reports stating that unrequited love was among the angles being investigated in the case.

Selangor police chief Shazeli KaharSelangor police chief Shazeli Kahar has since confirmed that the suspect in the case did not express his romantic feelings toward the victim, noting that investigations are still ongoing and being carried out thoroughly.
Affirming that the suspect had purchased the weapons - three knives - including a kerambit, which is a knife resembling a claw, online, Shazeli also said that social media influence and emotional triggers are possible factors behind the suspect’s attack. - Mkini
