Mp Regrets Cybertroopers Targeting Chong Wei For Laptop Donations

DAP's Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim Chee Keong has apologised to former national shuttler Lee Chong Wei after the latter was targeted by cybertroopers.
This came after Lee contributed to the "Asal Cek Mau Pi Sekolah", an initiative by Sim to assist needy students struggling to follow online classes during the movement control order (MCO).
Lee had donated laptops and tablets to the initiative after being moved by a video where a student and grandmother broke down in tears from receiving a free laptop as part of the campaign.
However, some cybertroopers sought to link Lee to the DAP and even called for him to be stripped of his datukship.
"I am saddened to read the condemnations against Lee by certain quarters for donating to the 'Asal Cek Mau Pi Sekolah' campaign. Some even called for his datukship to be revoked for supposedly supporting the DAP.
"Even if that was true, there is nothing wrong with supporting the DAP. But the fact is what Lee did had nothing to do with politics but to help our children," Sim said in a Facebook post.


Sim said his team had worked to identify children from poor families in need of laptops as classes move online during the MCO.
"Lee's generosity helped make things a little easier. Is it fair for him to be criticised for doing good?
"I'm a politician. I'm proud of my party, the DAP. But when it comes to helping the people, I have never considered party politics.
"We do not ask those we help about which party they support. I have never asked them to vote for our party," he added.
Sim also shared a letter which he would give to recipients of the free devices.
The letter, which does not carry any party logo, urged recipients to work hard so that they can contribute to the country in the future.
"When we give out the laptop/tablet, we don't stick a party logo on it. We don't write 'vote DAP' nor ask to support Pakatan Harapan," he said.
Sim said he regretted the attacks against Lee.
"I'm a politician, it's fine if I am attacked, I will fight. But I am saddened that our hero Lee is attacked for doing charity.

"If this is the attitude, who would dare to do charity? I sincerely apologise to Lee," he added. - Mkini
