Mp Convene Parliament To Pledge Support For Judiciary Reaffirm Mou
An MP has urged Putrajaya to convene a special meeting of the Dewan Rakyat for lawmakers to address ongoing "attacks" against the judiciary.
In a statement today, Ipoh Barat MP M Kulasegaran proposed the special meeting will allow MPs to debate and adopt an all-parties resolution to express concerns over the "attacks" against the judiciary as well as uphold the separation of powers and confidence in the judiciary.
"Government MPs will have a chance to say that it will not tolerate any attempts to undermine the confidence of our Judiciary as the absolute silence shows its insincerity towards the MOU," he said.
Kulasegaran (above) said that while Article 127 of the Federal Constitution forbids Parliament from discussing the conduct of judges, there are provisions to circumvent this law by means of a motion from not less than one-quarter of all elected MPs.
The MOU refers to a confidence-and-supple agreement between Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Pakatan Harapan.
Among others, Ismail Sabri pledged to uphold the independence of the judiciary in exchange for conditional support from Harapan.
Kulasegaran was referring to a series of events that led to the authorities investigating Court of Appeal judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali.
Nazlan has since lodged a police report denying that he was involved in any wrongdoing.
Court of Appeal judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd GhazaliHe is best known for being the trial judge in former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak's money laundering, abuse of power, and criminal breach of trust trial involving SRC International Sdn Bhd.
Najib is currently appealing at the Federal Court.
Ongoing investigations by the police and the MACC against Nazlan have prompted critics to allege judicial interference.
