KUALA LUMPUR: More than 200 protesters have turned up outside the Sogo shopping complex for an anti-corruption rally today.
The participants clad in black began making their way to Dataran Merdeka at 2.30pm while chanting slogans such as “Tolak, tolak, lawan rasuah” and “Bangkit, bangkit mahasiswa”.
Policemen were at the scene to facilitate the rally and manage traffic flow.
The participants appeared to be mostly university students. Youth wings from parties like PAS, Bersatu and PKR were also present, though they refrained from displaying their logos.
The rally was being held a day after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he had no objections to it.
Earlier, it was reported that Kuala Lumpur City Hall had sealed off the front entrance of the Sogo shopping complex using metal barriers and caution tape.
The crowd reached Dataran Merdeka at about 3.20pm, where they continued to chant slogans urging the unity government to take a stronger stance against corruption.
Upon arrival, Zaim Zulkifli, the chairman of the rally’s secretariat, said that the group demanded the government implement three key reforms to curb corruption.
He said they proposed separating the Attorney-General’s Chambers from the Prime Minister’s Office, reiterated calls for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to fall under Parliament’s oversight, and urged the enactment of the Political Financing Act. - FMT
