More Matriculation Seats Won T Affect Uni Intake Of Stpm Holders Says Ministry

The number of STPM holders accepted into public universities increased by 21.07% from 2017 to 2018.PUTRAJAYA: The education ministry today said the additional 15,000 seats for the matriculation programme recently announced by the Cabinet will not affect the intake of Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) holders in public universities
In a statement, it said it still practises meritocracy in student intake
“Based on this principle, all qualified candidates with the highest merit points, regardless of race, religion and background, will be given an opportunity to pursue their studies at public universities,” it said
It added that qualified candidates must meet the general criteria and special requirements of their selected programmes
The selection of students to Ipta or public institutions of higher learning will depend on their merit score, 90% of which is academic and 10% of which is co-curriculur
According to the ministry, the academic score for both STPM and matriculation is based on the cumulative grade point average of the candidate applying for the degree programme
“The success in getting a place at a public university depends entirely on the candidate’s merit points and qualification, as well as the allocated places, not on the category of the candidate,” it said
It added that the number of places available would also depend on the universities’ capacity and infrastructure
The ministry said the number of STPM holders accepted into public universities had increased to 4,242 (or by 21.07%) over the past two years (2017-2018), while those from matriculation programme also recorded an increase of 1,981 offers (10.83%) for the academic year 2018/2019. - FMT
