Missing Plot Why Are Pmx Azam Baki Unscathed In Albert Tei Sam Iskandar S Corruption Probe

DETRACTORS are trolling the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for having conveniently ‘exempted’ its head honcho Tan Sri Azam Baki and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim from any probe despite both being implicated in the leak RM600,000 graft video which has gone viral.
This came about after Azam who is the graft buster’s chief commissioner confirmed that both PMX’s ex-senior aide Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin and Datuk Albert Tei, the businessman in the centre of the Sabah mining license corruption scandal, will be charged in two courts today (Dec 4).
Shamsul who narrowly lost to UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (now Deputy PM) in the Bagan Datuk contest during the 2022 national polls will be charged with accepting bribes under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009 while Tei will be charged with giving bribes under Section 17(b) of the same Act.
The first proceeding shall take place at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today (Dec 4) with both men set to face five charges each before the duo are brought to the Shah Alam Sessions Court on tomorrow (Dec 5) for an additional charge.
This follows a week-long investigation involving 32 witnesses, of which a third individual who was previously detained (Shamsul’s alleged proxy Sofia Rini Buyong) has been re-classified as a witness and will not be charged.
To re-cap, both Shamsul and Tei were remanded for six days on Nov 29 to facilitate investigation into their corruption allegations.
‘Don’t extend contract’
Easier said than done, men in the street Malaysians who followed the Shamsul-Tei case closely have been left bewildered as to how transparent and independent investigation into the case is given not only was it completed in an express time but having purportedly left out both PMX and Azam himself.

Lending credence to the increasing doubts of many Malaysians as to whether PMX’s pledge of an all-out war on graft is merely rhetoric – or selective on perceived Madani foes – is out-of-favour PKR strongman Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli who tied the dismal corruption war success to Pakatan Harapan (PH) being shown the exit door by Sabahans.
On this note, the former economy minister warned that any move to extend Azam’s contract for the fourth time (his current tenure end on May 12 next year) will erode whatever is left of PH’s credibility in its commitment to eradicate corruption.
“The percentage of accused compared to investigation papers opened declined from 56% in 2020 to 39% in 2024,” revealed the Pandan MP in a social media post.
“The number of convictions also dropped – out of 300 cases, 36% of investigation papers ended in conviction in 2021 compared to 2024 whereby there were only 256 convictions, of which only 22% ended with successful convictions.
“Furthermore, there are high-profile cases that end with DNAA (discharge not amounting to acquittal) or cases are dropped or the accused is released after paying compound.”
So what should the ultimate solution be?
With all the controversies involving his (Azam) name, it’s time for the contract to be terminated.
If people ask me what PH needs to do as an initial reaction to the heavy defeat in Sabah, start by re-building its anti-corruption credibility.
Start by appointing a new MACC chief commissioner. If I were the one pushing, PMX would not listen. It would be better if Nurul Izzah (daughter and PKR deputy president) also pushed openly.
It would be even better if Anthony Loke and DAP also pushed openly. Only then can PH and PKR’s anti-corruption credibility be repaired little by little.”
