Ministry To Probe Bread Price Rise

(Bernama pic)KUALA LUMPUR: The domestic trade and consumer affairs ministry has only just received information that the Gardenia Bakeries will raise the prices of most of its bread products from Dec 1.
Deputy minister Rosol Wahid said his ministry would investigate if it was true.
“Till today, they (Gardenia Bakeries) have not informed us of the price hike,” he told the Dewan Rakyat when winding up for the ministry on the Supply Bill 2022 at the committee stage.
Earlier a few MPs had raised the issue of higher food prices, including vegetables and chicken. Rosol acknowledged that prices of certain items have gone up but he said it was still within the ministry’s control.
Cha Kee Chin (PH-Rasah) said the public wanted to know the reason for the rise in the prices of vegetable and food items.
He, too, brought up the case of Gardenia Bakeries increasing its prices, saying the business was doing well and the public needed bread even during the lockdown.
“They should retain their prices,” he said.
Cha also expressed surprise that the government bought t-shirts from Bangladesh to promote its “Keluarga Malaysia” (Malaysian Family) concept.
He said the government should have sourced for t-shirts from locals to help them during these hard times.
“The Malaysian Family t-shirts were given (to us) two days ago.
“The quality is good. But it is disappointing because it is made in Bangladesh.
“The t-shirt has the picture of the (Malaysian) prime minister,” he said.
Cha said he was not anti-Bangladesh or any other country, but the government should promote Malaysian-made products to spur the local economy.
He urged the government to encourage its ministries to buy Malaysian-made products, a campaign started during the Barisan Nasional era and continued by the Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional administrations. - FMT
