Ministry Invites Mps To Tour Shabby Areas Stresses Need For Ura
The Housing and Local Government Ministry has invited all MPs, including those from the opposition, to visit rundown urban areas in Kuala Lumpur to raise awareness on the need for the Urban Renewal Act (URA).
In a statement, minister Nga Kor Ming said the official invitation for the visit, scheduled for April 29, was sent out earlier this month.
“I would like to invite all MPs, including those from the opposition, to visit dilapidated urban areas together with the ministry and study the success of completed urban renewal projects,” he said.
Nga said the working visit would involve site inspections of several rundown flats to assess the poor living conditions and local issues faced by residents in the affected areas.
“MPs will also have the opportunity to view successful urban renewal projects, where old, dilapidated flats have been redeveloped into more modern, comfortable, and liveable residential areas,” he added.
The ministry has arranged three buses from Parliament to ferry MPs to the site visit.
“We have arranged three buses from Parliament to transport all MPs to see for themselves the dilapidated and poor conditions at several low-cost flats that urgently require attention.
“Through this visit, we aim to highlight the urgent need to enact the legislation,” said Nga.
The Urban Renewal Bill, first drawn up in 2013, is expected to be tabled in the upcoming Dewan Rakyat session.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reiterated that the government’s move to introduce the URA is driven by the need to improve the living conditions of Malaysians long trapped in dilapidated housing.
Anwar also stressed that the legal status of land involved in the urban renewal projects will remain unchanged, whether it is privately owned, under state authority, or situated on Malay reserve land. - Mkini
