Ministry Dg I Won T Ask Consumers To Buy Less Eggs
Consumers can choose between different categories of eggs in view of rising prices, said Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry director-general Azman Mohd Yusof.
This was his response when asked to comment on the criticism received by the ministry's Malacca director Norena Jaafar who urged the public to eat less eggs.
According to Utusan Malaysia, Azman said Norena had her own views on the matter but her delivery was not accepted by the public.
He said his advice was for the public to choose different grades of eggs based on their budget.
ADS"The government has intervened by providing a subsidy. If not, the price will be higher. It is up to the consumer to choose... There are various grades - AA, A, B, C, D and E.
"I won't say if you don't like Grade A, you should buy less. I hope all consumers can make their choices without cutting off their family's protein requirements," he said.
Ministry's Malacca director Norena JaafarEggs are sold according to various "grades" which denote different sizes - AA for above 70 grams, A for up to 70 grams, B for up to 65 grams, C for up to 60 grams, D for up to 55 grams and E for below 50 grams.
Since July 1, Putrajaya had increased the ceiling price for eggs by two sen for grades A, B and C.
Norena found herself in a social media storm after a video clip of her visit to a market began making rounds.
She had advised consumers to cut back on consuming eggs - one of the cheapest forms of protein available.
