Michelle Yeoh Becomes First Malaysian Actor Nominated For Oscar
Michelle Yeoh has received her first Academy Awards nomination for Best Actress for her role as Evelyn Quan in the hit film Everything Everywhere All at Once.
The Ipoh-born 61-year-old will be the first Malaysian actor to be nominated for an Oscar.
Previously, in 2020, two Malaysian-born producers based in the US had their short film St Louis Superman nominated for Best Documentary Short Subject.
The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards were announced today, with the winners to be unveiled on March 12 (March 13 beginning 8am in Malaysia) at a star-studded event that will be aired live from Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
In her Oscar-nominated role, Yeoh plays a Chinese-American immigrant who, while being audited by the IRS, discovers that she must connect with parallel universe versions of herself to prevent a powerful being from destroying the multiverse.
Her performance has already bagged Yeoh the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy award at the Golden Globes and she is also nominated for the 2023 EE Bafta Film Awards.
Michelle Yeoh after winning the Golden Globe AwardYeoh, a former Miss Malaysia World winner, started off her acting career in Hong Kong action films where she rose to fame in films such as Yes, Madam (1985), Police Story 3: Supercop (1992) and Holy Weapon (1993).
She became an international star with roles in James Bond (Pierce Brosnan played the titular spy) film Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) and in Ang Lee's Academy Award-winning martial arts epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000).
Yeoh received her first Bafta Leading Actress nomination for her role in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Her more recent works included the romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians (2018), Last Christmas (2019), and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
Yeoh had also been active on television, playing a North Korean spy in Strike Back (season 5, 2015) and had a recurring role in the science fiction series Star Trek: Discovery from 2017 to 2020, as well as starring in the fantasy miniseries The Witcher: Blood Origin (2022).
She is set to appear in the upcoming Disney+ series American Born Chinese and the eight-part series The Brothers Sun on Netflix.
Yeoh will also star in the film A Haunting in Venice and will have a singing role as Madame Morrible in the two-part film adaptation of the musical, Wicked. - Mkini
