Mediation To Continue For Yeo And Jamal To Settle Suit
The mediation centre of the KL Sessions Court today fixed Jan 10 for another round of discussions between the Energy, Green Technology, Science, Climate Change and Environment Minister Yeo Bee Yin and Sungai Besar Umno Division chief Jamal Mohd Yunos of the “Red Shirts” notoriety
Yeo had sued Jamal for defamation in June last year claiming that his remarks that she had abused Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor (Yawas) funds had damaged her reputation
Both of them were requested by the High Court on Dec 4 to present themselves at the centre for mediation efforts
However, the two-hour mediation process concluded without any settlement reached between the two parties
Jamal and his lawyer Mohammed Nasser Yusof were seen at the mediation centre at 2.30pm before Yeoh and her lawyer Sankara Nair arrived 10 minutes later
"A discussion has been held. So far, we try to find the midpoint today [...] it's more to one party said one thing and the other party said another," Mohammed Nasser told the media after the session ended
Jamal claimed that he had tried his best to settle the dispute
"But not all demands and discussions were agreed upon," he said
Meanwhile, Nair said offers were made and it was up to Jamal to decide on them
"There have been offers made but it's up to them now. Let's be very honest. Yeo didn't do anything wrong
“She just walked about getting on with her life. Then somebody came and defamed her out of blue for no reason. Are we supposed to keep quiet and say 'Never mind, do what you like'. Obviously not," Nair said
He said Yeo's feelings had been injured due to the allegation.
"She has never been defamed by anybody. And more so, for such wrongdoing, the allegation is very serious. And on that basis, I think it's only fair that the settlement must be acceptable
"If they accept our terms, what's the problem? We are reasonable, but it must be within reason," he added. -Mkini
