Mcmc In Talks With Tiktok Over Removal Of 18 Media Accounts

(NST) – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is in discussions with TikTok to get clarification on the removal of 18 media accounts from the platform.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said initial information from TikTok indicated that the removals were linked to media reports on a sexual assault case involving a female student at Masjid Jamek Sungai Masin, Batang Kali.
“I have been informed that 18 media organisations accounts on TikTok have been removed. Since yesterday, we have been in contact with TikTok to determine the reason behind this.
“The initial information I received suggests that it relates to a sexual harassment case in Batang Kali, which media outlets had reported on,” he said after launching the artificial-intelligence in the newsroom course here today.
The two-day programme, attended by 40 journalists from various media outlets, aims to enhance their understanding of AI and its role in modern journalism.
It is funded through the RM1 million allocation to the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during National Journalists Day 2024.
Meanwhile, Fahmi said he had requested a discussion to be held in the near future to review the functionality of TikTok accounts belonging to media organisations, ensuring that similar actions are not taken against them in the future.
He said the same report had also been published on other platforms without issue, so TikTok must clarify why its AI flagged it.
“But I see the issue here is that TikTok has informed us they have increased their use of AI moderation, which often misinterprets the content we upload.
“So, I see an opportunity for us to discuss with TikTok the possibility of granting leniency or perhaps a different status for media organisations, as they are engaged in news reporting,” he said.
On Feb 21, a 19-year-old male was detained for allegedly assaulting a female student who was performing her prayers at Masjid Jamek Sungai Masin in Batang Kali.
CCTV footage showed a man wearing a white skullcap entering the women’s prayer area, grabbing the victim from behind, and carrying her out of the prayer row.
The following day, police secured a seven-day remand order for the teenager, who holds a person with disabilities (OKU) card for a learning disability to assist in their investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 14 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
